| March 8, 2010 RECOGNIZING THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF CANADIAN WOMEN VICTORIA – Richmond East MLA Linda Reid rose in the Provincial Legislature today to acknowledge International Women’s Day and the women who have made it their duty to achieve equality for women around the world. “It is always a privilege to stand in this chamber and never more so than on International Women's Day. It is a privilege to recognize the gifts, the skills and the determination of amazing women,” said Reid. “It is an awe-inspiring opportunity and journey that I believe began with Nellie McClung,” “Other glorious women who have made incredible contributions include Iona Campagnolo, first chancellor of UNBC and former Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia,” added Reid. She called attention to the importance of recognizing the women who have inspired us and worked to elevate the status of women in Canada. MLA Reid mentioned how important their contributions are to political leadership, medicine as well as sport. International Women’s Day began in 1975 and has been observed internationally on March 8th ever since. Each year a theme for International Women’s Day is selected. This year Canada has chosen the theme of Strong Leadership. Strong Women. Strong World. Although it is referred to as International Women’s Day, many organizations and communities may spend the week recognizing the accomplishments of women and looking ahead to the future and what it will bring for women in seeking equality in all matters of life. -30- | |
